Decorating Wine Bottles For Christmas

I have seen these monogrammed wine bottles used for weddings or spelling out HOME. This Christmas twist will add some joy to these sad, empty bottles so you can display them in your home once again. It's nice to reuse and repurpose materials that you already have on hand. Your bottles don't even have to be matching sizes. Once you paint them, they will look uniform.

3 (empty) Bottles

Large Sticker Letters

Spray Paint (or white paint)

Twine

Pine or Evergreen Pick

Hot Glue

The supplies required for the diy Christmas Joy wine bottle display are empty bottles, spray paint, large sticker letters, and some accessories.

Step 1: Clean Your Wine Bottles

The first thing you need to do is to make sure your bottles are clean. Soak them in soapy water and peel the labels off. Then rub any adhesive residue off too. I find using lemon oil helps get the residue off really well. Just wipe it on the sticky areas, let it sit for a bit, then wipe off with a clean cloth. Minimal elbow grease required. Be sure the let the bottles drip dry after so you don't have sitting water inside them. As your working, you'll probably flip the bottles over and you don't want water drizzling out on ya.

These wine bottles are having a soak in a hot and soap bath. This loosens the adhesive on the labels and makes them easier to remove.

Step 2: Add Sticker Letters

Once your bottles have dried it's time to put a different label on them. Your JOY stickers. Measure up the from the bottom of the bottle and make your sticker letters on your bottles. One letter per bottle. The reason you measure from the bottom of the bottle is so when they are sitting in a ledge lined up, the letters all appear to be at the same level, even if the bottles are different sizes. You also want to make sure they are smooth and have a good seal to the bottle around the edges so no paint seeps behind.

Place your sticker letters on your clean wine bottles. Make sure they are level from the bottom of the wine bottles.

Step 3: Paint

Now you get to give the bottles a coat of paint. The spray paint used on mine is a Chalk Paint by Rustoleum. It dries to a nice matte finish. I love that look and think its a nice touch for the DIY Christmas Joy wine bottles.

Unfortunately, it's freezing temperatures where I live, and I had to spray paint outside. This meant the spray paint didn't go on uniformly. I sprayed the bottles outside then brought them inside to dry. While outside, the paint instantly formed into drip lines. But it did dry quickly once they were back at room temperature. You might seriously consider painting the bottles by hand with chalk paint and a paintbrush instead of spray paint if you're also in a cold climate.

Give your bottles a good covering spray. You may need to do two coats to get a smooth and uniform finish. The chalk paint dries to an amazing matte finish.

Step 4: Peel Off The Letters

When your paint has fully dried, you can remove your sticker letters. A pair of tweezer may help you to get a grip on the edge of the sticker. Then you can gently peel off each letter to reveal the outline of it in the color of the bottle.

Take your time peeling the stickers letters off of your bottles. Thats to avoid scratching up the painted edges of your letters.

Step 5: Wrap It Up

Taking the twine, you're going to hot glue the end of the twine just underneath the lip of the bottleneck. Then you can start tightly wrapping your twine around and down the neck of the bottle. Once you are at the end of the bottleneck, you will use a small drop of hot glue to keep the twine end in place.It's a good idea to have the twine start and end at the back of the bottle so the cut ends are less noticeable.

Use hot glue to keep the end of the twine in place as you wind it around the bottleneck.

Step 6: Dress It Up

Now you can have lots of fun decorating your Christmas Joy wine bottles set however you want. You may have leftover evergreen picks from some of the earlier crafts in this series and you can reuse those here. Trim off small pieces of pine needle branches and hot glue them on the twine of each bottle. I like to place them so they cover up where the twin wrap ended. You can also add decorative berries, ribbons, or glitter to the branches and bottleneck.

Have fun and be creative as you decorate your wine bottles. The bottles can have the exact same decorations or you can alternate designs.

The middle bottle doesn't have any foliage on it, just the berries. This was so that the foliage wouldn't catch on the other bottles.

Step 7: Optional Lighting

To make a fun glow, place fairy lights into each wine bottle. The lights will shimmer through the visible letters on your bottles and really bring joy to the room. If you're getting lights, try and get the ones with a small round battery pack that can fit on the top of the bottle opening. A bit of hot glue will help keep it in place and easy to reach to turn them on or off. And you can always hide the battery pack behind some foliage.
